Academy of Palliative Medicine (APM)

A Constituent Unit of the Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC)

The Academy of Palliative Medicine (APM) is a dedicated academic initiative under the aegis of the Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC). Established in July 2022, APM represents a vibrant community of healthcare professionals committed to advancing the research and practice of palliative medicine in India.

Our mission is to empower and equip the country’s multidisciplinary palliative care workforce through structured and high-quality education, training, and mentorship. By fostering academic excellence and clinical competence, APM aims to ensure that every patient with a serious or life-limiting illness receives compassionate, appropriate, and evidence-based care.

Palliative care is no longer a choice—it is an urgent and essential component of comprehensive healthcare. As the burden of chronic and terminal illnesses grows in India, there is an increasing need to build a skilled and future-ready cadre of professionals who can lead the delivery of person-centered, holistic care.

Testimonials

{I had an opportunity to attend APM’s ANSPC Batch 2 during September 2024 – April 2025. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn from the... Advanced Nursing Skills in Palliative Care course, which comprised 17 informative modules. I'd like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to each teacher for their valuable contributions, encouragement, and commitment to excellence in teaching. The sessions were engaging and effective, focusing on goal-setting, open communication, growth opportunities, and a positive work environment. Key takeaways included recognizing and rewarding contributions, autonomy, and building strong team relationships to boost morale and engagement. This training has been truly fulfilling and has significantly impacted my daily work in the community. It helped me structure and organize my tasks more efficiently. I've gained a deeper understanding of the importance of preparation, updating my nursing skills, and providing quality care. I'm proud to have completed the Advanced Nursing Skills in Palliative Care course. One suggestion for future training would be to offer a course on Pediatric palliative care, covering all chronic diseases, not just cancer. I learned that palliative care is supportive care from the time of diagnosis, not just end-of-life care. Lastly, I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this training. Thank you for making a difference!

{It was a great experience joining and successfully completing the Advanced Nursing Skills in Palliative Care with the Academy of Palliative... Medicine during September 2024 to April 2025. The course helped me gain a lot of knowledge, and helped me to correlate with my patients who are admitted in palliative care... It also helped me deal with the various issues faced by my colleague, who had stage 4 malignancy and dealing with end of life care... It helped me understand the various issues faced and the practical aspect of care at Karunashraya Palliative Centre, Bengaluru, which i visited with my colleague. One of the challenges I encountered at work was the limited authority granted to nurses and the inadequate understanding among oncology specialists regarding treatment goals in palliative care. Once again want to thank the whole team of knowledgeable faculty who patiently taught us all and encouraged us at every step of our journey. Thanks a lot everyone.

{Recently I've completed my 6 months distance learning training program in Palliative Care, offered by Academy of Palliative Medicine. This is a... brand-new course that was painstakingly designed by APM. The faculty members that were involved are highly skilled, with more than 20 years of individual experience in Palliative Medicine. This course is unique in the sense that, it has incorporated different teaching techniques. It provides the latest research articles and webinars for self-learning. It gives more than 100 hours of Synchronized learning where we interact with some of the most experienced faculty members. The graded assignments and end of module tests keep the students on their toes. The 12-day clinical attachment is an excellent opportunity for hands on learning - provided you choose the right center. There is a F2F (Face2Face) session at Karunashraya where each student presents cases, and the faculty members interpret. This is a very good learning curve. The final exam with MCQs and Practical is well designed to test the overall efficiency of the student. Since this is the first batch, there are some kinks which I'm sure will be ironed out in the next batch. As a student of the first batch, I had my initial apprehensions regarding the high workload and standard of self- reading material. With perseverance, it proved worthwhile towards the end. I sincerely thank all the faculty members and admin staff for their support throughout the program.

{It was a wonderful experience to be part of the BLCC Cohort 2.0. The course was exceptionally well organized, with each module leading us to a... deeper understanding of palliative care. The coordinators, Ms Sharmila and Ms Arya, were extremely supportive and approachable. Whenever we called or texted them, they were always ready with prompt solutions. Each module was taught by experienced faculty in a clear and engaging manner, which made the learning process easier and more meaningful. The three days at Karunsharya provided a valuable opportunity to witness the dedication and compassion with which the entire team cares for patients. This course has truly changed my perspective, both as a professional and as a person. It has transformed the way I look at patients and has helped me become more empathetic. Thank you!

{“Completing the certificate course in the Basics of Palliative Care has been a truly transformative journey. The most profound part of the... experience was the 'unlearning'—shifting my perspective to better serve patients in need. The faculty were exceptional, building a strong foundation through interactive sessions and role-plays that brought theory to life. The administrative staff were always a step ahead to help the students without any hesitation. Beyond the curriculum, the opportunity to connect with like-minded colleagues and share reflections on our daily practices made the journey both supportive and enjoyable. I’m walking away with a renewed outlook on palliative care."
